Because of the way that water distorts vision the more water you're looking through, I think the background works quite well. You certainly shouldn't consider it a failure. The high detail close to the viewer and the vaguer and vaguer appearance the further back it goes only enhances the depth of the image.
Really nice use of light on her tail, giving it a very touchable, rounded quality. The flukes are a little lacking in this and look a bit flat in comparison to her fins. They appear to be thin and fluttery tissue, but aren't curving through the water or being affected by currents. On the other hands, the fins at her waist are just perfect. You've caught the look of thin living tissue fluttering through water very accurately.
The scales on her breasts are my favorite part in this. I really love the light play, particularly on the near side. The breast in profile looks as though the scales don't go all the way around it. The tail is beautiful the way it is, but I am curious about how it might have looked if you'd done similar scaling there. Something to consider if you revisit this concept!
Really nice work on her fingers and the way locks of her hair have separated out in the water. The ear being behind her upper arm and then projecting over her lower arm adds good depth, as well.
The only part that just doesn't work for me is her hairline (?), as I'm not sure what's going on there. Is her hairline uneven, with tufts of hair growing out separately, or is this some sort of flesh frill covering up part of her hairline? I assume the former, but I think some darker shadows and maybe a bit of light reflecting off of what's supposed to be in the foreground there would help clear it up.
All in all, this is really beautiful. Definitely an image best admired in a larger size, too.
A beautiful picture. I love her pose and the way she looks at one. Also the colours are very nice. All in all the picture has a special atmosphere and a nice touch. Good work
